Disaster Waste Recovery

The world’s leading specialists in disaster waste response

Disaster Waste Recovery is a not-for-profit organisation that provides immediate debris recovery and waste management support to disaster and conflict-affected communities.

We are the only NGO (non-government organisation) in the world specialising in this highly complex area of waste management.

One of our founders, Martin Bjerregaard co-authored the UN Disaster Waste Management Guidelines, which provide guidance to governments and agencies around the world, and has written and delivered numerous training packages and guidelines for organisations across the UN and EU.

Disaster Waste Recovery works on a global scale to help people affected by natural disasters, civil unrest and complex emergencies. Thousands of tonnes of waste can be created during a disaster and we work with communities affected to provide urgent and timely solid waste management and environmental protection support.

Specifically, our work includes:

  • Robust systems for waste and debris collection
  • Innovative waste recycling with the aim of creating sustainable livelihoods
  • Debris and rubble recycling into (re)construction materials.
  • Safe disposal of all waste types
  • Training in waste and debris management
  • Preparedness planning
  • Waste assessments and project design
  • Sustainable livelihoods
  • Integrating into ongoing recovery projects

We are UK-based but our work takes us all over the world.
